Like the membrane inside of an eggshell, our Shatterproof Ceramic Urns have a special coating on the inside that bonds to the clay yet remains flexible. Even if it is dropped and broken into many pieces, the urn maintains the integrity of its shape so that no harm will come to the cremated remains. There is a patent pending on this process, so these urns are available exclusively from Sonoma Urn Company.
The Octagon Urn at left is the urn that was used for the tests you see below. For the test, the lid was glued in place (which makes the shape much stronger) and then the urn was dropped in the parking lot at the pottery. Through the first two drops it surprised us by remaining completely intact. On the third drop, the glued on lid separated from the body and the urn broke into many pieces. But as you can see from the picture, the shatterproofing process prevented the urn from breaking into many separate pieces.
