Because people and pets come in a variety of sizes, Sonoma Urn Company offers a range of urn sizes, so you can choose the most appropriate urn for your needs. Urn sizes are given in cubic inches and refer to the capacity to hold a given volume of cremated remains. A general rule of thumb in determining the necessary volume is one pound of body weight produces a bit less than one cubic inch of ash after cremation.
A "standard" urn size is considered to be 200-220 cubic inches, and will hold the cremated remains of most adults. Smaller sizes, often called keepsake urns, are frequently used when just a portion of the ash will be retained, and the rest will be scattered; some people prefer to keep just a small amount as a keepsake. Small urns are useful when ashes are to be divided among family and friends. They may also be preferred by owners of smaller pets.
